CHASS Webserver Changes

November 26, 2010

The www.chass website is about to move. This will make it independent of your home directory (and thus personal website) storage. If you are no longer able to access our systems to update your personal homepage, please ensure that you're connecting to the host origin.chass.utoronto.ca, not www.chass.utoronto.ca.

Mail Account Migrations

August 25, 2010

Please note that if you haven't yet had your mail account migrated to the new systems, we'd like you to do this ASAP. The migration is painless and you always have access to your mail. It generally takes about 20 minutes of your time.

New Phishing Attempt

Please be aware that there is a new, fairly convincing, phishing attempt circulating. The message indicates that your account has exceeded your storage limits and requests you to visit a web site that is potentially dangerous. This message is not from us, and you should not visit the suggested link.

Electrical outage

July 15, 2010

Province-wide voltage reduction tests carried out today adversely impacted one of our server rooms. Several of our servers did not withstand the voltage drop and crashed. They are now all operational.

Planned electrical outage

Please be advised of a planned electrical outage for the Robarts Library complex, that will affect all our services, on Monday May 24th.

To ensure an orderly shutdown, prior to the electrical outage start time, we will be turning off all our servers at 6:00am, and they will be brought on-line at 9:00am Tuesday.

Mail/Web Outage Overnight

We experienced an outage of one server last night that affected mail and web service for some of our users.

The host origin.chass.utoronto.ca failed overnight. This interrupted mail service for users not yet migrated. It also affected the primary CHASS website and personal project sites hosted on this machine.

As of 8:45am, service has been restored. We're investigating the cause of the failure. Please let us know if you're still having any issues. We apologize for the inconvenience.

New mail servers

We just sent a note to our users to inform them of the general availability of some new mail servers at CHASS.

We'd like to move our users' accounts from the old systems to the new ones. The migration is fairly simple and does not involve any outage for you in terms of accessing your mail. Your email address does not change and your contacts will not notice any difference when sending mail to you.

Short outage

Today there was a short interruption of web and email services when one of our servers had to be rebooted.

Change in spam policy

Please be advised that in the next week or so, there will be a change in how we handle your 'Spam' mail folder.

Presently, spam is stored until you explicitly delete it. We're changing this such that spam is automatically removed after 45 days. Please ensure that you review your Spam bin periodically if you're worried about false positives in our scoring.
